Tonight’s demonstration was given by Janet Nunn. Janet is an award-winning watercolorist known for her use of bright color and blending techniques. Tonight was a hands-on painting demonstration, where we all got to participate using Dr.Ph. Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors.

Janet began with a warm up exercise of drawing arpeggios. By making squiggly lines, straight lines, circles, and boxes, this exercise warms up your motorskills, hand, brain and eyes before drawing or painting. It’s a great way to loosen up.

Janet next demonstrated an easy way to paint Christmas ornaments for a fun holiday card!

Step 1: drop three small drops of different colors, (using the Dr.Ph. Martin’s Hydrus Watercolors) in the shape of a triangle.
Step 2: use a small “shot” plastic cup or glass and twist it around in the three colors, completely covering the rim of the cup.
Step 3: now, press the cup onto your paper or card, leaving a colorful circle.
Step 4: dip your finger in some clean water and wipe it around the inside of the circle, blending the colors and leaving a white highlight. Don’t forget to make a knob somewhere on the outside of the circle to indicate the hanging part of the ornament.
Step 5: paint a couple more ornaments on your paper or card with the hanging part facing different directions.
Step 6: after the paint is dry, take a fine tipped black marker and draw ridges around the knob and a hook.
Step 7: add a border and sign!

Janet next showed us all how to paint using a piece of string!

Step 1: soak your string is water
Step 2: drop three more Hydrus colors on your palette, then run your wet string through all three colors.
Step 3: gently lay the string down in an oval shape onto your watercolor paper, with the ends of the hanging off the bottom edge.
Step 4: cover with another piece of paper, then while holding the covered paint down with your hand, slowly pull the string out of the bottom of the card.
Step 5: gently remove the top piece of paper and behold! The colors are beautifully mixed, leaving what resembles a Calla lily!
