Paul is one of PPWS’ Featured Artists for January 2026!

Paul’s Bio:

Paul is a Colorado-based artist whose work blends romantic realism with a strong narrative sensibility. Drawing inspiration from the American West, mythology, and speculative imagination, his paintings often feel like moments drawn from a larger, unseen story. Hathcoat’s approach emphasizes atmosphere, light, and emotional resonance, using watercolor’s transparency, gouache’s opacity, and acrylic’s thick impasto to suggest mystery rather than explain it.

Paul’s favorite things to paint:

The American West, figurative narratives, horses, mythic and romantic imagery, science fiction, fantasy, and scenes that suggest story, memory, or dream.

Besides watercolors, Paul also works in gouache, acrylic, water crayon, drawing, and mixed media.

Paul’s favorite or most admired artists:

Frederic Remington, N.C. Wyeth, French Expressionists, and contemporary narrative realists who honor craftsmanship and storytelling.

Paul’s goals for the next year:

To update my website; add illustrations to my award-winning science fiction romantic adventure book series; place my work with a gallery that values strong narrative painting; complete a cohesive new body of watercolor work; and continue refining my voice as a storyteller through paint.

FAVORITE ARTSY QUOTE

“Thus we never see the true state of our condition till it is illustrated to us by its contraries; nor know how to value what we enjoy, but by the want of it.”

— Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe

Paul’s Tip or Trick:

Let the paper do the heavy lifting. Fewer strokes, patience between washes, and trusting transparency often create stronger results than trying to control everything.
